PORTFOLIO :: THESIS 2006 / 2007
Interactive Jewellery - Allison Wells

I believe very strongly that life is short and time is fleeting; it is therefore important to me that I seize the day and that I live each moment to the fullest. One of the ways I do this is by exercising humour and play as often as possible. This is reflected in my jewellery, which I intend to be a means of communicating and encouraging this philosophy.

These pieces are meant to feel playful and personalized. If the jewellery requires action on the part of the wearer in order for it to be worn, it will inevitably offer the wearer more pleasure through the experience of “completing” and incorporating ones own creative input. My goal is to cater to everyone by providing different scenarios that appeal to all sides of an argument.

Scenario 1:

Wear the Bird/Animal inside the cage.

Scenario 2:

Wear the Bird flying away or an Animal running away from the cage. Choose this scenario if you wish to make a statement about animals rights. For example: Parrots have wings so they can fly over wild landscapes, not just sit in little cages with nothing to do to maintain their spirits but sing to themselves.

Scenario 3:

Wear a human (happy, depressed, lesbian couple, African American, or even a naked) in the cage. This scenario is sure to stimulate discussion. You could argue that you are wearing a depressed woman in a cage to remind others how a caged animal might feel or perhaps you wish to compare middle class humans in our society to a bird in a cage.

Scenario 4:

Mix and match Scenarios to create a story.
